A passion for the studio: Bryan Brophy
In addition to running his corporate photography business based in Dublin, 1IMAGE Photography, the award-winning photographer Bryan Brophy has a serious passion for studio photography.
Brophy, who is perhaps better known for his corporate work, says: “All photography is a challenge in trying to achieve as perfect an image as possible, usually with a lot of elements beyond your control. Location work has its difficulties to overcome and so does studio work, but with studio work you have more control over the lighting, to achieve the image you have in your mind’s eye. Location and studio work are very different, polar opposites in many ways, the combination and experience of working in both disciplines though, I believe make me a better photographer.”
His interest in photography and in using a camera began in his transition year in secondary school, due to the influence of a teacher who had a keen interest in photography. After finishing school Bryan moved to London and worked in the photographic industry for five years. He then returned to Dublin to work as a freelance press photographer, which “was a hugely rewarding experience from a working photographer’s point of view, you could on average be photographing four or five completely different situations all in one day, one minute photographing the Taoiseach in his office, followed by a sporting assignment, news story and then Beyonce in concert etc. – a great learning curve.”
