Veolia: Global expertise for a new era in water

veolia-photo Veolia’s global expertise and local presence makes it well-placed for changes to the water services sector.

Veolia Water Ireland welcomes the establishment of a new public utility company, Irish Water, which is set to transform the State’s water services landscape.

This shake-up of Ireland’s water industry will see responsibility for water services passing from 34 local authorities to a single national authority, Irish Water. It also opens up a wealth of exciting opportunities to reduce the cost and improve the quality of treated water production, sewage treatment and sludge disposal, throughout Ireland.

Veolia Water has been operating in Ireland since 1994. It is a major player in the design, build, operate (DBO) segment of the Irish water industry, which over the last decade has successfully developed and delivered a range of value-for-money, fully compliant water treatment solutions.

As the pace of change within the Irish water market starts to accelerate, Veolia Water Ireland is poised to help the industry achieve the desired step change in efficiency and effectiveness. This may sound like a tall order, but as part of the world’s leading environmental services group, Veolia Water Ireland has access to unrivalled global expertise in developing and delivering water and wastewater treatment solutions.

• Network management: Veolia Water subsidiary SADE, the largest pipe installer in Europe, has developed innovative approaches to network maintenance that balance risk allocation and optimisation.

• Meter management: Veolia Water has expertise in all aspects of water metering, including installing meters (through the Vennsys project, it is installing 1.6 million water meters in the UK over a 10-year period), developing smart meters and delivering customer care services from installation right through to collection of revenues.

• Capital delivery innovation: Veolia Water has worked in partnership with local authorities to develop risk-sharing contracts where investment is driven by the performance outputs of plants. Ireland has hundreds of small water and wastewater works, many of which need to be upgraded to increase efficiency and achieve environmental compliance. Veolia has implemented, in a joint venture with Scottish Water, a similar programme that delivers £2 billion of such projects over five years, on time and on budget.

• Technological leadership: with more than 850 researchers and an annual R&D budget of €120 million, Veolia has developed hundreds of patented technologies that can bring real quality and savings to complex projects. In the wastewater and sludge domain, these technologies can be brought to bear to greatly increase the energy efficiency, reduce the volume of sludge and recover a number of beneficial by-products.

Veolia Water Ireland is well-placed to help Irish Water meet its operational and environmental challenges head on.
