Outlining its latest IT security offerings
Most companies and institutions nowadays have IT security measures and software in place. Some are voluntary, some are compliance-regulated. But the facts regarding data safety gathered by surveys in the last few years speak for themselves:
- 59 per cent of corporate workers surveyed stated they would leave with sensitive corporate data upon lay-off or departure;
- 79 per cent of these respondents admit their company did not permit them to leave with company data;
- Approximately 68 per cent are planning to use such information as email lists, customer contact lists and employee records that they stole from their employer;
- 18 per cent of Irish organisations surveyed reported insider-based cybercrime, 10 per cent reported internal financial fraud.
(Data from ISSA Ireland survey and Dr Larry Ponemon’s study, 2009)
What good is any security policy and any antimalware software, aimed at defending from external threats, if a single malicious or negligent employee can compromise the security and sensitive data of the whole company?
In recent years several known data loss-related scandals have rocked Ireland. Recall the Bord Gáis’ laptop loss with information of 75,000 customers, Phoenix Ireland and their loss of personal details of about 62,000 customers, Bank of Ireland’s missing USB key with about 900 customer account numbers, names and addresses, the Department of Social Protection and the stolen laptop with personal information of 380,000, and many others.
While regulations mainly deal with rules of reporting data breach and data loss to relevant institutions and those affected, the manner of internal threat protection is left pretty much to the ingenuity of those responsible for the data themselves. Many partial solutions are available, as well as internal policies that can have a positive effect on data safety but, if inconsistently applied, they may produce a feeling of false security, which could result in even greater damage.
In order to keep data in check and provide a consistent and comprehensive internal threat protection level, Safetica, available from Wexford company Reflex IS, has introduced a new line of software products, with never before seen levels of integration, which keep all sensitive company data under safe control. Not only can it limit employees’ access rights according to their clearance level, it can also monitor unauthorised access attempts, copying, emailing, bluetooth access or other data removal methods, so it can ensure that sensitive company data stays where it is meant to: inside the company. It can also maintain a secure password policy for all users, offers web access monitoring, email and network traffic control etc, making sure employees stay focused on the job at hand and minimising the risk of any data disclosure. Should a USB stick or a laptop with delicate data be lost or stolen, Safetica software also has the ability to automatically destroy or lock the data so it is unusable for unauthorised access.
Safetica is simple to install and maintain, and offers all around safety and monitoring of all key processes within a company or organisation, offering real protection against the potential failings of the staff. At the same time, Safetica protects the interests of the company or institution, but stays in compliance with all legislation governing employee and customer privacy rights.
